An Uzhgorod resident urges Ukrainian lawyers to act in good conscience and to demonstrate commitment to the profession

Transcarpathian jurist, scholar Vasyl Lemak appealed to his colleagues with request to respect the basic requirement for the profession: "Everyone of us, choosing the legal profession, sworn to protect individual human rights and freedoms.Everyone. Lawyers, prosecutors, judges, notaries – all swore to the law, rule of law and justice.
The petition of 140 Prague judges to the state leaders demanding an objective investigation of violations of the law, and the the arrest of the police special forces, who on November 17, 1989 used brutal force against the students, was a turning point of the "velvet revolution" in Czechoslovakia.

Analyzing the situation in the country, Vasyl Lemak identifies specific actions "Judges and prosecutors must not imprison people without a reason, prosecutors must not ignore the fact that dozens of injured students are held in unknown places with unknown procedural status, in a week they have no suspect in beating of students, but many suspects in the beating of special forces, lawyers must ensure real protection of each victim. All together, they must uphold the law.And explain, explain. explain. A lot depends on the judges – they have been being prepared for something like this in recent years, with pressure and dismissals".
