Uzhgorod Castle is the historical heart of the city of Uzhgorod in Transcarpathia. The castle was erected in the Middle Ages by the Drugets, then repeatedly rebuilt. The fortress is located in the heart of Uzhgorod on a hill of volcanic origin.
According to the traditions and logic of military fortifications, it is located on a castle hill and surrounded with a moat. The castle is built on the edge of a steep slope, so one of its walls hangs over the precipice. Today, the fortress is used as the premises of the Museum of Local Lore, where archeological displays are exhibited and complete information about the geography, fauna and flora of Transcarpathian region is presented. In the dungeons you can also see the prison and torture room.
