On November 17, 2016, at 12:00, the City Council and the Hungarian consulate will open a new monument in Beregovo.
Beregovo City Council initiated the creation of a memorial site, erection of a monument in honor of the 60th anniversary of the revolution and the liberation struggle of 1956 against the Soviet dictatorship in Hungary.
The location for the monument is the square in front of the railway station. It was chosen because in 1956 Soviet tanks were transported from Transcarpathia to Hungary by Beregovo railroad, and also tanks were going to the border via the adjacent main road.
Brief description of the work by Uzhgorod sculptor Mykhailo Kolodko: two metal poles of the monument – the rusty, broken one symbolizes the ruthless suppression of the revolution of 1956, and the one next to it, growing from its base, made of stainless steel symbolizes the regime change in 1989-1990, a new democratic world, and devotion to traditions.
