The State Enterprise "Rakhiv Forestry" is making a new forest road to the Astronomical and Meteorological Observatory on the Mount Pip Ivan Chornogirsky "White Elephant".
Until recently, there were no roads in this area. This hampered both access to and transportation of harvested wood from hard-to-reach forests. The 3 km long road will allow you to reach the unique astronomical and meteorological observatory, whose history dates back to the First World War.
The former observatory "White Elephant" was built at an altitude of 2028 m above sea level.
Before the Second World War, the observatory had a strategic significance. The establishment of the observatory was initiated by the Polish military. General Leon Berbecki suggested Warsaw University to equip an astronomical department there, since the old Warsaw Observatory was no longer suitable for observation. In 1936, they began to build the observatory.
The building was built in the style of constructivism and had the shape of reversed letter "L"; the astronomical dome was located at the top. The thickness of the walls made of limestone blocks is 1.5 m. The observatory had 43 rooms and 57 windows.
Later, the observatory became the property of the USSR. Meteorological observations were conducted there until June 1941. However, in 2018, it is planned to be re-opened and used by researchers from Poland and Ukraine. Precarpathian and Warsaw universities have identified several key areas. In particular, it is planned to create an astronomical observatory, a seismological station, a biostationary for the research of the flora and fauna of the Carpathian National Park, a permanent international meteorological station, and a tourist station.
The construction of the new road is planned to be completed by the end of June 2018.
