Uzhgorod Mayor Bogdan Andriyiv met today with the Consul General of the Slovak Republic in Uzhgorod Janka Burianova. They discussed prospects of expansion of cooperation between the regional center of Transcarpathia and Slovakia in political, economic and cultural spheres.
Mrs. Janka Burianova raised to the Mayor the issue of establishing in Uzhgorod a monument to a political figure known not only in Slovakia, but also worldwide, general of the French army, astronomer Milan Rastislav Štefánik. Considering that the regional center of the Transcarpathian region is densely populated by the Slovak national minority, it would be very appropriate to perpetuate the memory of the famous countryman. Representatives of the Slovak Consulate had repeatedly raised this issue, but there is hope that the new city authorities will support this noble initiative.
Bogdan Andriyiv said that we have many opportunities for comprehensive cooperation between border regions, because Transcarpathia, and its regional center in particular, and Slovakia are united with long historical and cultural relations, cooperation in scientific and humanitarian spheres. Also, the mayor supported the proposition to establish a monument to Milan Štefánik in Uzhgorod as a sign of friendship.
