Theft of manholes has long been one of the most pressing problems for every city in Ukraine. Uzhgorod is no exception. The invasion of scrap metal hunters, who steal manhole covers, result in open holes that are a danger to pedestrians and motorists.
Missing manhole covers often cause damage to vehicles, accidents, and even tragedies.
Recently, the police caught another thief. Returning home late from service, a police officer noticed on Drugety street a man carrying a metal manhole cover. The policeman stopped him. It turned out that the 39-year-old resident of Uzhgorod had stolen the manhole cover on Tychyna street in Uzhgorod with the intention to sell it.
When the police officer tried to detain the thief, the latter began resisting. A fight started between them, but the police office managed to call the investigative team and the thief was taken to the police station.
Criminal proceedings over this incident have been initiated.
As of August 21, Uzhgorod city police registered 20 thefts of manhole covers. This is 5% more than for the same period of 2014.
Stealing of manhole covers (CCU 185) is subject to criminal liability, the site of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs Office reminds – imprisonment for a term of one to three years, depending on the size of the damage.
