A man smuggling illegal migrants across the border was detained in Rakhiv district

Prosecutors of the Rakhiv Department of the Tyachiv Local Prosecutor’s Office approved and sent to court an indictment against a Rakhiv resident accused of illegally transporting several people across the state border of Ukraine in a life-threatening manner (Part 2 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The pre-trial investigation revealed that in June this year, a 23-year-old man tried to smuggle two Turkish citizens across the state border of Ukraine. After taking the migrants to the shore, the defendant instructed them how to cross the Tisa River into Romania.

One of the foreigners failed to do that due to the considerable width and depth of the river and lack of proper swimming skills. Upon returning to the territory of Ukraine, he was detained by officers of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Currently, the indictment against the migrant smuggler has been sent to the Rakhiv District Court for consideration on the merits.

He faces imprisonment for a term of five to seven years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years.
