A famous Transcarpathian political prisoner Mykhailo Shvab has died

On Monday, April 8, at the age of 92, a famous Transcarpathian political prisoner Mykhailo Shvab died.A native of Velyki Luchky, at the age of 20, he was taken in Hungarian torture chambers during the Kovneriv process as a Ukrainian patriot. In 1946, he was again condemned, this time by the Soviet regime. He served term in Stalin’s concentration camps.

After the liberation he worked at various jobs, graduated from the Chemistry Faculty of Uzhgorod University. For the long time he worked as a teacher in Uzhgorod School of Applied and Decorative Art, where for his gentle character he was called "Daddy". After Ukraine gained independence, he has actively participated in the activities of the People’s Movement of Ukraine and "Enlightenment." He has raised three children.

Mykhailo Shvab was an example of true Ukrainian patriotism and Christian way of life. Memories of this brave and humble man were recorded in the documentary "Silver Land. Chronicles of Carpatho-Ukraine."
