On this day, 80 years ago, an independent state – Carpathian Ukraine – was proclaimed in Khust.
And in Krasne Pole, at the same time, hundreds of Transcarpathian young men were heroically defending the newly established state in an uphill battle.
Today, on the 80th anniversary of the Carpathian Ukraine, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko came to honor the heroes.
"This event is extremely important for every Ukrainian wherever they live – in Transcarpathia, in Donbas, or outside our country. Free Independent Ukraine is honoring today those who proclaimed Carpathian Ukraine 80 years ago", – the head of the state said during his speech. The President stressed that before the Second World War, when other states were appealing to the aggressor, Ukrainians were defending the world.
During the celebrations, Petro Poroshenko awarded posthumously the famous figure of that time, Stepan Klochurak, with the highest award – the title of the Hero of Ukraine. His nephew received the award on his behalf and said that the award belongs to all Transcarpathians, therefore he would give it to the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore.
