For two consecutive days, the openings of new miniature monuments, which have already become one of the highlights of our city, were taking place in Uzhgorod.
On Friday, on Ferenc Rakoczi II street, in the presence of an unexpectedly large number of officials, a monument to the famous Uzhgorod naturalist Istvan Laudon was opened. It was here that he created a unique park of exotic plants, which was recognized as one of the best in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Despite all the services of Istvan Laudon to the city, there is no street or square in Uzhgorod officially named after him. To some extent, the opening of the mini-sculpture repairs this injustice. Those, who attended the ceremony, noted that the sculptor Mykhailo Kolodko potrayed the famous naturalist and traveler very skillfully. The head of the Department of Tourism, Fedir Shandor, said that that the oldest in Transcarpathia magnolias and ginkgos grow in this park, and they were brought by Laudon. So all other trees of these species in the region can be considered descendants of the trees, which can be seen here.
And on Saturday there was another opening – less official, but also significant and interesting. The monument "Knyahynya Meteorite" was established on Petofi square, near the confectionery "Fekete sas". Fedir Shandor, said that this meteorite is the largest of the meteorites found in Europe’s in recent history – its weight was over 500 kg. It fell in the tract near the village of Knyahynya in June 1866.
The largest fragment of the meteorite was bought from a resident of the village by a local forester, who then resold it to the Vienna Museum.
– At the moment, fragments of the "Knyahynya" meteorite are kept in 88 museums all over the world. But none in Ukraine, – F. Shandor said.
From now on, even the bus stop next to the sculpture is called the "Knyahynya Meteorite," which is even reflected on the road sign.
Well, we are expecting new interesting sculptures…
