2000 kilometres to sister town Uzhgorod by bicycle (photo)

A delegation from the sister town – Darmstadt, Germany, consisting of people whose hobby is cycling, is visiting Uzhgorod at the moment. As the press service of Uzhgorod city council reports, 16 guests have travelled almost 2000 miles by bicycle and after 6 days on two wheels they have come to Uzhgorod, having found themselves at "their" holiday – Veloden, which takes place in our city for the fourth time.

"Back in 1991, we decided to visit each of 14 Darmstadt’s sister cities by bike, – says the head of the delegation Michael Schwalm . We started with France, and in 2001 we visited Uzhgorod once. Now we are back here and happy to visit your city.”

At the beginning the Darmstadt’s group consisted of 36 people, the youngest cyclist is 16 years old, the oldest one – 71, and they, along with several companions arrived in Prague, someone shortened the route, stopping in other cities. The cyclists were unlucky on their way: near Prague, a participant of the group was injured in the accident. She was taken away from the highway by helicopter. At the entrance to Ukraine they had some problems too – Slovak customs officers did not allow several participants pass and then they had to cross the border by some regular bus. But finally everything is fine and as a remarkable coincidence the German guests have been welcomed in Uzhgorod at the time when the city is celebrating Veloden (Bike Day).

Because of the tight schedule, the guests had to refuse from the Mayor Victor Pogorelov’s proposal to join the excursion around the town in the framework of "Retrobike", which started today at 11:00 a.m.
