At the time of the crime, the brother was 18 years old, his younger sister was 15. According to the press service of the prosecutor’s office in Transcarpathian region, on June 3, 2019, Khust district court upheld the position of the juvenile prosecutor and found two residents of the city of Khust – brother and his minor sister – guilty of the murder of their mother and sentenced both to 14 years in prison.
They committed the crime in February 2017 in the city of Khust.
"The murder was planned in detail. Thus, during the trial, the prosecutor proved that, when the mother fell asleep, they struck her multiple times with a knife and a wooden stick. The resulting wounds caused the death of the woman," – the press service informs.
After that, they wrapped the body of the murdered woman in a bedspread and carried it to the river on the outskirts of the city of Khust which is almost 3 km from their home.
"The motive for committing the murder was a theft committed by the sister in 2016. The mother wanted to report this crime to law enforcement officers.
Having heard the arguments of the prosecution and the defense, the court found the defendants guilty of intentional murder committed with a preliminary conspiracy by a group of persons (Clause 12 of Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)," – the statement reads.
Consequently, the defendants were sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Also, the court partially upheld the claim of the victim – the husband of the deceased woman – and recovered from each of the accused UAH 400 thousand of damage caused by the crime.
At the request of the prosecutor, the defendants are held in custody, without the right to be released on bail.
The verdict of the court has not yet come into force, because the term for the appeal has not yet expired.
