13 “Magnets” of Transcarpathia: Velyky Berezny district

Velyky Berezny district is one of the least populated districts of Transcarpathia, with only 27,000 inhabitants, even the district center is a town, not a city. However, it is difficult to describe in one article all unique tourist attractions that are located there.

First of all, those are natural treasures, most of which are located in Uzhok National Park. Local virgin forests are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe".

In addition to the forests in the broad sense, there are also lone natural monuments – "Dido Oak" and Champion Oak, both trees are over 1000 years old. Champion Oak is one of the oldest trees in Ukraine, its age is estimated at more than 1300 years. In 2010, it ranked third at the National Tree of Ukraine contest.  

There is another interesting place in the national park, which should definitely be protected – the place of fall of the Knyahinya meteorite, the largest in Europe, one fragment of which alone weighs more than 280 kg. Its overall size is hard to estimate. The event took place in 1866. Well-known writer Jules Verne is said to have come here because of the meteorite.

In addition to natural monuments, there are also architectural ones, namely the Boyko Church from 1745, which is under the UNESCO protection. It is the St. Michael Church in the village of Uzhok. This is one of the oldest and most beautiful temples in the region, and you must visit it before the temple is destroyed by time and human negligence.
