Uzhhorod Deputy to Face Trial for Bribe Over Military Service Deferral

A deputy of the Uzhhorod City Council will face trial for bribery related to helping obtain a deferral from military service.

The Uzhhorod District Prosecutor’s Office has sent an indictment to court against the head of one of the divisions of the Uzhhorod City Council’s Department of Social Policy, who is also a local deputy. He is accused of demanding and receiving an illegal benefit (Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

It is worth recalling that on June 20, law enforcement detained the official while receiving a bribe of $1,000. The official had promised to help a citizen obtain a decision confirming care for a close relative. This allowed the citizen not only to receive monthly compensation but also to apply for a deferral from military service.

At the prosecutor’s request, the accused has been suspended from his position. The indictment has been submitted to the Uzhhorod City District Court for further proceedings.

The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the Uzhhorod District Police Department with the operational support of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Zakarpattia Oblast.

According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime until their guilt is proven in a legal proceeding and confirmed by a court’s guilty verdict.
