Several attempts to smuggle almost 50 thousand pounds, household appliances and more than 10 boxes of tobacco products hidden from customs and border control were prevented at the Ukrainian-Hungarian border.
In the first case, a 32-year-old resident of Chernivtsi region was returning home from England through the customs post "Tisa" in a car Mercedes-Benz. During the customs and border control, he declared only used clothes and shoes for personal use. However, the inspectors together with officials of the State Customs Service of Ukraine, during the inspection of the vehicle, found foreign currency in the amount of 48,580 pounds. The money was in a travel bag among the driver’s personal belongings in 22 envelopes. In addition, in 8 cardboard boxes in the luggage compartment, they found undeclared appliances: refrigerator "Igenix", washing machine "Samsung", trimming machine "Excel", faucet "Parkside", vacuum cleaner "Einhell", disc grinders "Hikoki" and "DeWalt".
The undeclared goods that require additional assessment and thw foreign currency in excess of the allowed 10 thousand euros were seized.
In the other two cases, a 46-year-old and a 29-year-old Moldovans chose to cross the Ukrainian-Hungarian border at 4 am with a difference of a few minutes, apparently hoping for the fatigue and inattention of inspectors and border guards. One was driving a minibus Mercedes-Benz, the other one was driving a Ford Transit to the Czech Republic.
They deliberately chose the "green corridor", thus declaring honest intentions to cross the border. However, based on the results of the analysis and risk assessment, the vehicles were taken out of the general flow for an in-depth inspection. Using technical means of inspection, customs officers together with border guards found in one minibus 4950 packs of cigarettes without excise stamps of Ukraine: "MARLBORO", "GOLD", KENT, "NAVY BLUE". The tobacco products were hidden in a hollow structural cavity under the decorative trim of the left and right side walls of the car and tightly packed in two hiding places in the bottom of the minibus. In the second car the same cigarettes and other brands were found: "WINSTON", "BLUE LINE", a total of 5090 packs, also tightly packed in two caches of the car bottom. Both Moldovan citizens recognized the illegal tobacco products as their property. Reports under Part 1 of Article 483 of the Customs Code of Ukraine were drawn up over the both offenses. The found more than 10 thousand packs of cigarettes without excise stamps need additional assessment by an expert.
The cars used for illegal transportation of the hidden goods, with a total value of over UAH 200,000, were confiscated.
