In Transcarpathia, the SBU blocked the smuggling of metallic mercury (PHOTOS)

In Transcarpathian region, the Security Service of Ukraine prevented the smuggling of a highly toxic dangerous substance – metallic mercury – to the European Union. 
According to the preliminary version of the investigation, a citizen of one of the European countries planned to smuggle eight kilograms of mercury across the state border. 
The offender’s vehicle was detained by the police at the checkpoint "Uzhgorod". During an in-depth inspection of the car, a dangerous product was found among the foreigner belongings. The offender hid mercury containers in packages with flour. The carrier was detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Under the criminal proceedings initiated by the investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine, the foreigner was notified of being suspected of smuggling. 
Investigative measures are being taken. The value of the seized mercury, the origin of the toxic substance, the sellers and buyers of the "goods" are being established. The detention was carried out jointly with the customs and border services under the procedural control of the Prosecutor’s Office of Transcarpathian region.
