We are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945 and the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation.
Festivities took place today in Uzhgorod, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were not attended by as many people as usual.
The head of the Transcarpathian Regional Administration Oleksiy Petrov, the Chairman of the Transcarpathian Regional Council Mykhailo Rivis, Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv, the Secretary of the Uzhgorod City Council Andriana Sushko, representatives of veterans’ organizations laid flowers to the monuments "Ukraine – To Liberators" on the Ukrainian-Slovak border "To Volunteers of Transcarpathia – the participants of the Second World War” on Cyril and Methodius Square and to the Eternal Flame on the Hill of Glory.
There are currently 2,272 war veterans living in Uzhgorod, including 28 World War II veterans and 284 persons who have the status of "family members of the deceased." On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory over Nazism in World War II, many of them received food kits on the initiative of the Uzhgorod City Council, and more than 1,700 war veterans were paid an annual one-time cash benefit totaling UAH 2,727,320 at the expense of the state budget.
