170 thousand hryvnias: this is the price of running for the mayor of Uzhgorod

The new election code signed by Volodymyr Zelensky has increased the amount of deposit at elections by almost 40 times.

The significant increase of the deposit for running at the city elections was due to a change in the formula of the deposit calculation, because now it will be equal to four minimum wages per 10 thousand voters. Previously, the formula was four minimum wages per 100,000 voters.

The formula only applies to regional centers and cities with over 90,000 voters. Deposit for all other cities will be calculated according to the old system. This applies to both mayoral candidates and the party lists.

The "Chesno" movement has calculated that in Uzhgorod a candidate for the mayor will have to make at least 170 thousand hryvnia deposit. Just like in the old election code, the deposit is refunded only to the winner of the election, and the rest is transferred to the city budget.

Experts and political scientists beelieve that in large cities, the number of people willing to participate in city elections will drop significantly, because the risk of losing a hefty sum will outweigh any ambitions.
