Exotics: an amateur gardener from Transcarpathia grows an unusual tree (PHOTOS)

A Transcarpathian grows the unusual for Ukraine asimina.
Asimina (Asimina triloba) is still an unusual plant for Ukraine, but recently it has become quite popular in our country.
Due to asimina’s incredible frost resistance, it is a very promising crop for many regions of Ukraine, the AR portal reported.
An amateur gardener from Transcarpathia Vasyl Chalbash is one of those who grow this unusual tree.
“Asimina triloba is originally from America. It is a very frost-resistant crop, in Ukraine these trees are known to withstand up to -29 degrees frosts. It is the only representative of the custard-apple family that can grow here, in fact it is the only tropical fruit that can be grown in our latitudes. Asimina is the most delicious fruit I have ever tasted, it is worth growing it in the garden. The smell of the fruit is reminiscent of kiwi, strawberry and banana combined. And it tastes like banana, pineapple and mango mixed together,” – Vasyl Chalbash, a hobbyist from Transcarpathia says.
Asimina blooms in the first days of May, before the appearance of leaves, with large flowers up to 3-5 cm. Asimina fruits are 10 to 20 cm long, and the weight of each fruit can reach half a kilo. Some fruits can weigh even 800-1000 grams, or even more. Source.
