Supermarkets and shopping centers will take part in the campaign “City without Polyethylene” in Uzhgorod

During the "Days of Energy" events, which will take place from June 18 to 21, 2019, the campaign "City without Polyethylene" will be held in Uzhgorod.

The main purpose of the campaign is to encourage people to buy products in reusable containers, and to encourage shops and markets to phase out the use of polyethylene, the department of the city economic development informs.

Polyethylene bags are one of the most commonly used packaging materials due to their practicality and ease of use. But along with these undeniable advantages, they have a significant drawback – polyethylene poorly decomposes in the soil and releases toxic substances when burning.

Plastic bags eventually become non-decomposing waste and are dangerous. The amount of waste polyethylene on the planet is growing rapidly, contaminating the environment and affecting our health. A quarter of the water surface is covered with plastic waste. Millions of seabirds and mammals, small turtles and large whales and seals die because of polyethylene. Meanwhile, more than a trillion of such bags are produced annually in the world.

Currently, 4 supermarkets and shopping centers have joined the cmapaign "City without Polyethylene", namely "Uzhgorod P.S.Yu." Ltd. (Vopak), "Dastor Uzhgorod" Ltd, "Nova Liniya" JSC, "Epicenter-K" Ltd.

Uzhgorod City Council asks city’s residents and socially responsible businesses to support the campaign and, if possible, begin to reduce the use of polyethylene in everyday life.
