The Center for Genome Research, the first in Central Europe, will be founded this year at Uzhgorod National University. This agreement was reached during the visit of Professor Volodymyr Smolanka, the Rector of the UzhNU, to the Beijing Genomic Institute, one of the two most powerful scientific and technological institutions in the world that are engaged in research in the field of genetics and genomic bioinformatics.
"This will be not just a new step but, in fact, a giant leap in the development of genetic science in our country, because in accordance with the agreement, the Chinese partners for the first time will provide a modern sequenator – a device that allows to do analysis of a complete sequence of nucleotides throughout the genome of any organism. And the ability to do a genetic analysis of any tissue or tumor, for example, offers incredible possibilities not only in predicting possible diseases of a particular patient, but also the selection of an individual effective plan for treating the most dangerous diseases. The creation of this Center will have an important not only scientific but also social significance," – the rector of the UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka said.
The opening of the Center for Genome Research will create new opportunities not only for Ukrainian scientists but also for their colleagues from scientific institutions of Central European countries working in the field of biology and medicine, the site of UzhNU informs.
