A large batch of tobacco products being illegally transported to Slovakia was found today by the border guards of the Chop detachment at the checkpoint "Maly Berezny".
At 3.00 am, a truck Fiat driven by a 57-year-old citizen of Poland with two passengers, citizens of Ukraine, arrived at the checkpoint to depart from Ukraine. Following the risk assessment, the border guards decided to inspect the vehicle in depth. During the inspection, law enforcement officers, together with customs officers, found a specially equipped cache in the truck. There was a hole in the fuel tank of the vehicle, where 1083 packs of contraband cigarettes from different manufacturers were hidden. Most of the tobacco products were without excise stamps of Ukraine. To access the cache, the border guards had to dismantle the fuel tank.
In accordance with the law, the truck Fiat with Polish registration and the cigarettes found therein were cofiscated by the SFS employees. The value of the seized goods is currently being estimated.
Similar caches with 730 packs of cigarettes were found yesterday at the checkpoints "Tisa" and "Uzhgorod".
