In the wake of the autumn mushroom season, here’s a selection of strange and unusual mushrooms growing in our forests.
The first in our list is the mushroom with an intriguing name – "stinking rainbow"
The name itself suggests that this is an unusual mushroom. But, besides the unpleasant smell, which gave it its name, this mushroom has another unique property. It grows faster than bamboo. The researchers found out that in 1 minute its cap grows by 5 millimeters. As for its edible properties, the issue is disputable. Some people cooke and eat them, but we do not recommend it.
The next mushroom is definitely not edible – it’s porkhavka.
It was recognized as the most plentiful in our region. Indeed, you are sure to see it while walking in the woods. Each such mushroom contains up to seven trillion spores. Sometimes they grow up to whopping 20 cm in diameter.
Xylaria also grows in the territory of our region.
This dark mushroom grows on trees and was found to be able to narrow the pores of wood so that it can be used to make musical instruments with unique sounds, such as the Stradivarius violins. These mushrooms cannot be eaten, and due to their creepy appearance they got their second name "dead man’s fingers".
