The opposition Hungarian Liberal Party (MLP, chairman Gabor Fodor) responded to the statements by Viktor Orban. In particular, in their opinion, the Orban’s government should not hinder Ukraine’s joining NATO.
– The Hungarian Liberal Party believes that constant obstruction to Ukraine’s integration with NATO is a serious irresponsibility on the part of the Orban’s government. The Liberal Party is convinced that Ukraine’s accession to NATO is in the interests of Hungary and the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia, – the Hungarian Liberal Party stated.
Although they agree that "the Ukrainian educational law will have a negative impact on our compatriots living in our eastern neighbor, but at the same time we believe that it is a much bigger risk if Ukraine becomes a victim of Russia without NATO support."
According to the MLP, it is not Ukrainian nationalists, but pro-Russian right-wing radical groups that are responsible for the attacks on the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.
It should be noted that the chairman of MLP Gabor Fodor was a founding member of the political party Fidesz, but left its ranks in 1993 because of "conservatism." In 2013, he became the founder and first chairman of the Hungarian Liberal Party. The party accepted young people without "political history" and proclaimed a program called "Impressive Liberalism".
