In neighboring Hungary, citizens voted for cancellation of daylight-saving time

On August 31, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, referring to the results of August (from July 4 to August 16), nationwide European consultation, which 4.6 million European citizens took part in, said that Europeans did not want to use daylight-saving time, the MyHungary.Net reported. About 84 percent of respondents voted for this.

Nine out of ten Hungarians, who took part in the vote, voted for cancelation of different times for winter and summer. Among the respondents who, supported the abolition of the winter and summer time in other European countries, the results were as follows: Poland – 95%, Finland -95%, Spain – 93%, Lithuania – 91%, Italy – 66%, Malta – 54% Cyprus – 47%, Greece – 44%.

Proponents of daylight-saving time argue that daylight helps to save energy and increase productivity. The opponents believe that it negatively affects people’s health. Daylight-saving time in the European Union was introduced in accordance with the European Parliament Directive 2000/84/EC of January 19, 2001. The EU countries must decide by April 2019 whether they plan to use winter or summer time.
