The season of the unique natural phenomenon – mass flowering of the rare Heufell saffron – has come to the "Old Village", which is located in Kolochava in Transcarpathia.
Usually the first flowers appear here at the end of March and bloom en mass until the end of April, the portal Kolochava.com informs.
The Heuffel saffron (Crocus heuffelianus Herb) is a decorative early spring plant that is on the brink of extinction. The scientific name "crocus" is associated with ancient Greek mythology. The Greeks considered the plant a symbol of happiness, the flower of Aurora – mythical goddess of dawn.
Usually, on the territory of the museum "Old Village", there are large flowers of purple saffron with dark spots at the end of the petals. Yellow anthers and stigmas adorn the flower. The stem is very short, so it seems that the leaves and flowers come directly out of the bulb. The plant attracts insects not only with sweet nectar and bright color, but also with a gentle aroma.
The Heuffel saffron is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. In Kolochava, the flower is under close observation and protection.
