We continue to present our readers the "magnets" of Transcarpathia that tourists can choose to go to. After Rakhiv and Tyachiv district, we offer attraction No. 3 – Perechyn district.
Sometimes, we make trips not for monuments and gastronomy, but for well-known figures, whose life inspires us.And Perechyn district has such an interesting figure. Yes, cheese tourism is now actively developing there, and also you can try frog legs like in France, but it is also the land of the unique Lemkos culture (ethnographic group of Ukrainians) and a paradise for cyclists… But I choose Perechyn in order to see the unique monument to the postman – Fedir Feketa.
In the nineteenth century, when technical progress was not yet in the active phase of its development, people like Fedir (Theodore) Feketa, despite the distance of more than 20 kilometers and unfavorable weather, would do their work steadfastly and faithfully, delivering letters to those who was waiting for them. For that, he received the nickname "ambassador".
Fedir was born in 1789 in the village of Turya Remeta, and from there he would deliver letters and parcels. And although this is not quite a man’s profession, but they say that he had lost his arm due to an accident, so he decided to become a postman, because he wanted to do what he was able to do.
A staff in the hand, and a heavy bag on the back. A long walk ahead. In his native village, there is a memorial plaque in his honor with the inscription: "In Memory of the Ambassador Theodore Feketa. Died in 1838". And in Perechyn, his monument was established. Open city tours start from there, and newlyweds go to ask the postman to "bring" them happiness.
