Badger or bison? Voting for the symbol of the Carpathians is starting in Ukraine

The All-Ukrainian EcoProject "Together for Nature" announces the start of the national poll for the animal symbol of the Carpathians. The list of cadidates for the honorary title includes 10 inhabitants of the Carpathian forests. The winner will become the main hero of cartoons, educational materials for children and a resident of the Morshynsky Park of Sculptures!

The purpose of the poll is to popularize rare and endangered species of animals and to draw attention to the need to restore the ecosystem of picturesque Carpathian forests.

"The list includes rare animals: bear, lynx, salamander, wildcat, bison," – Tetyana Karpyuk, eco-education coordinator at the World Wildlife Fund in Ukraine (WWF) says. – For example, there are about 300 bears in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Salamander, lynx, bison and wildcat are the species that are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. We also added more wide-spread animals: hedgehog, wolf, badger and squirrel – they or their homes can be seen by any tourist traveling in the Carpathians. However, they are very important for the ecosystem. But our list would be incomplete without a unique amphibian – the Carpathian newt, which is an endemic species – lives exclusively in the Carpathians."

On the page of the "Together for Nature" project, the candidates will conduct a real election campaign. Anyone can campaign for their favourite. The winner animal will receive popular recognition and go down in history!

Every Ukrainian can vote for their candidate here.

Voting lasts until January 20, 2018.
