Traditions in metal: an open forge operates in Uzhgorod (PHOTO-REPORT)

This Saturday, they were making a ptchfork there – an ordinary agricultural tool, but its making also requires blacksmithing skills. Every product here is made with soul and according to the traditional process.

Professional blacksmiths and even metal artists Stepan Rusnak, Roman Murnyk and Tomash Gordienko work in the room with the inscription "1701". They are in love with fire and iron, and also with their work: it is not only for real men, but also for real artists. And also, it is a revival of blacksmithing traditions.

Moreover, the Transcarpathian open forge, which operates in the territory of the museum inn "Detsa u notarya" is not only a craft project, but also a tourist one, designed to present the traditions of blacksmithing. 1701 is the year when Ferenc II Rakoczi, by his decree, separated the brewery from all other workshops that belonged to him, including blacksmith’s, and thus the decree could be considered the first official document on the creation of a forge. So says tourism expert Fedir Shandor.

In the open forge, you can not only see metal household and decorative items being made according to the traditional process, but also to try to work at the anvil and to show this work to children. Also, here you can see a horseshoe being made and take it for memory and for good luck, or even have a forged item repaired – skillful blacksmiths are ready to do work of any complexity.  And they will also tell you about the history of blacksmithing and blacksmith’s tools, explain various types of blacksmith’s craft.
