Today, a memorial sign for the fighters for freedom and independence of Ukraine was solemnly opened near the Uzhgorod National University’s rectorate on Narodna Square. The ceremony was attended by the mayor of Uzhgorod Bohdan Andriyiv, the rector of the Uzhgorod National University Volodymyr Smolanka, teachers and students of the UzhNU, the chairman of the Transcarpathian Regional Organization of the All-Ukrainian Society of Political Prisoners Ivan Korshynsky, military chaplain.
The memorial is a gift from the university, which is celebrating the 72nd anniversary of its foundation right now. The decision on the memorial "To Fighters for Freedom and Independence of Ukraine" was approved by the members of the Executive Committee of Uzhgorod City Council, following the request of the Uzhgorod National University.
The stone, that was used for the monument, was brought from Kamyanytsia village of Uzhgorod district, the project was developed by teachers of the Department of Urban Construction and Economy of UzhNU. So, now Uzhgorod has another symbolic place that reminds us that Heroes do not die as long as memory of them lives.
