Castles of Transcarpathia, which everyone should see! (PHOTOS)

Among the 10 Ukrainian castles to be seen by everyone, there are two in Transcarpathia. This was written by the publication coma.in.ua.

Uzhgorod castle

It is located in the very heart of the polyethnic city, which is now the center of Transcarpathian region. Another well-known name of Uzhgorod – Ungvar – came to us from the distant X century, when the Hungarian horde defeated local Slavic masters, White Croats, and seized Transcarpathia.

The castle is very well preserved. Although there are no tall walls and towers, it still remains one of the most visited tourist objects of Transcarpathia. People come here to feel the spirit of the ancient traditions of the White Croats, Magyars, Austrians, Germans, Czechs, Slovaks, and, of course, Rusyn-Ukrainians who ruled in Ungvar. They come, in particular, hoping to see a ghost of the White Maiden typical for most castles. Currently, there is a museum in the castle. An incredible collection of Carpathian musical instruments is presented there…

The "Palanok" Castle (Mukachevo)

In the middle of a broad plain, which is the valley of the Latorytsya river, in the southwestern part of Mukachevo, a lone mountain stands. The top of the mountain is crowned with the towers of an old castle. There are few monuments like this in Ukraine.

Rusyns-Ukrainians, Hungarians, Wallachians, Austrians and other peoples have shed sweat and blood in the walls of the fortress during its almost thousand-year-long history. The Palanok survived hundreds of assaults and sieges.Since the end of the seventeenth century, the Palanok served as an Austrian prison, and in the Soviet period a vocational school was situated there.

Nowadays, this is undoubtedly one of the most famous Ukrainian castles – well-groomed, with museums, many souvenir shops, coffee shops and wine cellars.
