The educational platform Nomen holds another interesting lecture.
Uzhgorod 30 years ago – the regional center on the western border, the city where socialist reality met local traditions.
The city, where industrial buildings coexisted with cozy old streets, the residents of which were attending both May Day demonstrations, and the church, standing in lines for scarce commodities and watching TV programmes of three countries.
The third and last part of the virtual journey "Uzhgorod through the twentieth century" will focus on the final period of the Soviet era – 1980s. Together with historian Vladislav Tovtyn, we will talk about how Uzhgorod residents survived Gorbachev’s war on alcohol, what they thought about perestroika and whether they contributed to the democratization and glasnot. We will recall the cultural life of Uzhgorod, formation of subcultures, visual propaganda and provision of urban amenities.
Vladislav Tovtyn is a historian, graduated from Uzhgorod National University. He is engaged in cultural and gastronomic tourism in the Carpathian region. Participant of the project "Uzhgorod Open Tours".
