What to do if you have broken a mercury thermometer in the apartment?

Mercury thermometer, which can be found in the medicine cabinet of most Transcarpathians, is not only useful but also potentially dangerous. One bad move – and up to 5 grams of harmful mercury will be spilt in the room.

The main symptoms of mercury fume poisoning is a metallic taste in the mouth, nausea and vomiting, weakness and general ill health, severe headaches, painful sensation in the throat when swallowing, loss of appetite, increased salivation, swollen and bleeding gums.

When mercury spills in the apartment, follow this course of action: bring people out of the room and open the windows, put on a gauze bandage on the face and rubber gloves on the hands and collect mercury using a syringe or sheets of paper (do not use a broom or vacuum cleaner), treat the area of mercury spill with a solution of potassium permanganate and rinse with soapy water, ventilate the room well (adults can enter the room after one day, and children only after 3 days).
