A “fly” in the ointment of positive news… Once again on the history of the city

Some readers, of course, may accuse me of being a reactionary, a conservative and a grouch who is willing to spoil any progressive and good idea. Nevertheless…

Today, the press service of the City Council announced the following information:

Especially for the Day of the City, the "Yafar Ukraine" LLC – the official representative of the Fabryka Armatur Jafar S .A. (Poland) in Ukraine, together with the regional representative in Transcarpathian region – the "Termotrans" LLC – presented Uzhgorod a fire hydrant JAFAR, which was set in front of the restored historical complex "Owl’s Nest". Soon, other hydrants in Uzhgorod can also be updated and they will become another gem of the city.

The news is seemingly positive – stronger cross-border relations with the neighboring country, Uzhgorod can be decorated with interesting artifacts. Everything looks great. But…

But our city already has hydrants. And very characteristic, ancient and inextricably linked with the history of our city at that. But they are not Polish, they are Czech. The existing Uzhgorod hydrants are recognized attraction, decoration, feature of the regional center, and the public initiative "1930" is already working on this matter. They have already conducted research, contacted the Prague company, which produced them 86 years ago, the company "Turbogaz" agreed to assist in restoration of the most damaged structures. It all is a part of the authenticity and even charisma of our city. All Uzhgorod hydrants are of the same type.

So, the question is what the modern hydrants JAFAR, which, though vaguely resembling ours, but still are quite different, have to do with it!

We appreciate the attention of entrepreneurs from the neighboring friendly country and are grateful for trying to do a good thing.

Yet, please, let’s cooperate in some other matters? Do not touch and do not replace the old, familiar, charismatic Czech hydrants. We will gradually fix them up – paint, repair, make lost parts…

Honestly, there is enough pseudo-historicism in Uzhgorod as it is…
