To prevent tragedy similar to that that happened at Lviv landfill in Hrybovychi, the Mayor of Uzhgorod Bogdan Andriyiv initiated unscheduled meeting of the commission on technogenic and ecological safety and emergencies to examine the situation at the landfill where waste from the regional center of Transcarpathia is dumped. This was announced on the page of Uzhgorod city council on Facebook.
Besides the commission members, there were a deputy of the Transcarpathian Regional Council Oleksandr Ledyda, the director of the municipal enterprise KATP, deputy of the City Council Stanislav Ponomarev, a representative of the State Ecological Inspectorate in Transcarpathian region.
As you know, the landfill where solid waste is dumped, is located 3.2 km from the city, in the territory of Baranyntsi village council, near the village of Barvinok and the city cemetery.
Within the allotted 9 hectares, there are three ground-buried pits where waste is dumped using a so-called card method. Every 2-meter layer of compacted trash is covered with a 0.25-meter layer of soil.
The projected waste volume is 1,260 thousand tonnes, but since November 1998, when they began operating the landfill, more than 1,107 thousand tonnes of waste has already accumulated, that is the resource of the dump will be exhausted in approximately 3.5 years. Every year, more than 42 tonnes of waste is dumped in the ladnfill (about 185 thousand cubic meters).
The commission determined that the landfill needs urgent raising of the supporting wall (bunding) up to 3 meters around the perimeter of the first card and installation of gas conduit.
According to Bogdan Andriyiv, the issue of building a new landfill is being considered, not just for the disposal of solid waste, but along with the construction of a waste recycling plant. But now it is very difficult, because there is no land, no investorm it is difficult to agree with people where to locate such facility.
