During three days – 27, 28 and 29 of May – in 23 cities of Ukraine, mercury-containing bulbs will be collected for subsequent proper disposal – this information is being spread in the network Facebook.
The temporary collection points will be operating on 27 of May from 13.00 to 21.00, on 28 and 29 of May – from 11.00 to 19.00.
Fluorescent light sources will be accepted in shopping centers of one of the hypermarket chains.
The World Health Organization classifies mercury as a toxin highly dangerous to the environment and human health.
Bulbs with mercury should be subject to special disposal – they can not be disposed of in regular garbage containers.
"Just one gram of mercury in the environment contaminates 200 thousand cubic meters of water and 3 million cubic meters of air. In addition, mercury accumulates in the roots of plants and trees, fungi, algae and fish," – the organizers of the campaign say.
At the receiving points, experts will advise how to choose LED lamps and high efficiency lighting fixtures that are environmentally friendly.
