Uzhgorod: look who is leaving…

On Friday, October 30, the chief architect of Uzhgorod Petro Szarvas filed a letter of resignation. The formal wording is "by mutual consent".

On the same day the resignation was granted and the Acting Mayor of Uzhgorod Victor Shchadey signed a relevant order.

According to Zakarpattya online, Petro Szarvas worked as the head of the urban planning and architecture department – the chief architect of Uzhgorod less than three months, while the appointment procedure lasted more than three months.

"I was asked to head this area of work by the Acting Mayor. Since it was the period after the victory of the revolution and I had reasons to believe that it would be possible to change the old ways in urban planning and cultural heritage protection, I agreed. Although, I was aware that it would not be easy, because of the decades old schemes of the so-called "regulation" of urban development through deputies, who remained the same and preserved their specific methods of "work", – P.Szarvas told the Zakarpattya online.

In his words, "problems began almost from the first day of work. Many of these people were simply not willing or not able to understand that the city required a different approach, and in fact emergency measures. Instead, they wanted to solve their own mercantile issues in a manner that is not consistent with the interests of the city and the community. "

"Unfortunately, I did not feel the support of the management of the city in this issue. So I decided that I could not work in such conditions.

"I hope that in the upcoming local elections, which are likely to take place this spring, the city will receive a chance of survival and, further, of a better future. For now, the community should take care to prevent new losses in addition to the fatal, irreparable damage that has already been done" – P.Szarvas said.
