As a result of the constructive discussion between the President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Serhiy Bubka, all parties agreed that Ukraine would direct its efforts to the fight for the right to host the Winter Olympics in 2026, and would not continue to fight for the Olympics 2022.
This decision was driven by the current political and economic situation in Ukraine, which was discussed by the three parties – the official website of the International Olympic Committee informed.
"The preliminary assessment by the IOC Working Group indicates that Lviv has great potential for future development," the IOC President Thomas Bach said. "In my conversations with the Prime Minister of Ukraine and the President of the NOC, we agreed that under current conditions it would be extremely difficult to continue to fight for the right to host the Olympic Games in 2022, but at the same time, the upcoming campaign of Ukraine as a possible venue of the Olympics has a huge importance for the country in general and Ukrainian sports in particular."
In turn, Arseniy Yatsenyuk confirms that "the application for 2026 will have a huge potential for economic recovery and can have significant benefits for the Ukrainian society."
"We would like to thank the IOC for their help and understanding and great support provided to the Ukrainian athletes from all over the country both morally and financially," – the president of the NOC Serhiy Bubka said.
Thus, Ukraine will direct efforts to the fight for the right to host the Winter Olympic Games 2026.
