In Irshava, there is no tradition to water each other on Easter, as in some other localities of Transcarpathia.
But here, they water each other today, on Saint George Day.
Traditionally, they use plastic bottles, buckets and bags filled with water, plastic guns. Usually, on this day, even adults are not spared. Therefore some city streets are empty, especially those where there are high-rises.
Traditionally, they arrange watering wars between streets. Usually, they have occured between groups of boys from Naberezhna and Partyzanska, or Shevchenko streets. The team gains victory when rivals flee wet to the skin and with empty containers.
And, while just a few years ago, girls were mostly the "victims", for the past 2 years, they have been running on Naberezhna Street as "fighters" with quite big plastic buckets. But on St. George Day, in Irshava, you do not get mad if you have been doused with water. Attackers explain, "Today, it’s allowed, it’s St.George Day."
