Ukraine’s refusal from the Association with the EU is related, among other things, to the lack of willingness to provide the necessary assistance to the country on the part of the EU.
This was stated by the head of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, in an interview with the radio station Deutschlandfunk, the ITAR-TASS reported.
"I think we underestimated the dramatic political situation in Ukraine," – he said.
According to Schultz, "Ukraine, economically and especially financially, has been in deep crisis since the establishment of democracy."
"They urgently need money, they need a reliable gas supply," – the head of the European Parliament said.
In his view, the EU was not ready to help Kyiv to the same extent as Russia.
"In Europe, it is not particularly popular to help countries that are in crisis… And Ukraine will receive a short-term help from Moscow that we Europeans can not or do not want to give in this form," – Schultz said.
"This is one of the reasons why the government of Ukraine under this huge pressure finally decided on cooperation with Russia," – he said.
