In Uzhgorod Press Club, there was a press conference of the organizers of an unusual social campaign, which will soon be held in Uzhgorod. It’s about people with disabilities, for whom there are designated spaces on the parking lots, as indicated by the special signs applied on the roadway. However, Ukrainian people with disabilities can rarely park on these spaces, because they are always occupied by healthy and wealthy (judging from the price of cars) drivers.
Thus, in Uzhgorod they are launching a special campaign that aims to shame those who do not understand the signs and address this problem. They have already prepared special magnetic stickers and many more interesting things.
Yaroslav Shafar, the organizer of the campaign said that over the past two years by the efforts of the Rotary Club "Uzhgorod Rock" they have arranged parking spaces for people with disabilities. "This is not a mean campaign, it is designed to do a good deed. But it must effectively stimulate" – he said.
During the campaign children from the rehabilitation center "Way of Life" will be putting on the cars parked on the spaces for disabled magnetic stickers with the text "You took my place, take away my illness too!" Magnetic sticker will not leave a trace on the car, it will not damage it, but maybe it will make people think. The first version of the sticker was more sarcastic, but they decided on this text.
Yaroslav Shafar reminded that Ukraine ratified the Convention on the Rights of persons with disabilities under which people with disability are entitled to free parking. All parking lots must have up to 10% of the space for this specific purpose.
Vaslyna Marko, the director of the Social and labor rehabilitation center "Choice" remarked: "We can not say that nothing is being done because very good laws for people with disabilities have been passed. All companies and institutions are required to equip their territory with parking space for disabled. Unfortunately, the law is not fulfilled. And there is no justice. People must comply with the law, and we will not have to hold any campaigns."
V. Marko also added that even near Uzhgorod City Council there is no sign of parking space for disabled. "We should start with outselves. I think it is a very positive campaign with an educational purpose," – she said.
