Today is the most important day…

The International Day of Solidarity of Journalists, which is celebrated today, September 8, was established in 1958, by the resolution of the IV Congress of the International Organization of Journalists – the oldest and largest international association of journalists in the world.

The date for celebration of this international day was not chosen by chance. It was on this day in 1943 when the Czechoslovak journalist, literary and theater critic, journalist, activist of the Czechoslovak Communist Party Julius Fucik was executed by the Nazis in Berlin. Even in Nazi prison Julius did not abandon his profession and managed to write a book "Notes from the Gallows," for which in 1950 he was posthumously awarded with the International Peace Prize.

Traditionally, on the day of solidarity of journalists, around the globe there are events bringing together journalists from various countries. In addition, the Pulitzer Prize – one of the most prestigious literature, journalism, music and theater awards in the U.S. – is almost always awarded on September 8, the International Day of Solidarity of Journalists.
