The sentence of the Uzhgorod city and district court in Transcarpathian region against the former officer of Mizhhirya police department, who, abusing his official position, as a member of an organized criminal group helped to smuggle illegal immigrants across the state border of Ukraine, has entered into force.
One of the organizers of the illegal business was a Transcarpathian who in early 2007, together with a resident of Kyiv – a citizen of Vietnam – arranged an international channel for smuggling immigrants from Southeast Asia.
Overall, the criminal group consisted of 10 people, including residents of Cherkasy, Kyiv, Sumy and Transcarpathian regions.
The duty of the police officer was to ensure free traffic of trucks with illegal immigrants across the border region.
In July 2007, in the village of Maydan in Mizhhirya district law enforcement officers detained a truck. This vehicle, in a specially equipped cache, was carrying 43 people – Indians, Pakistanis and Vietnameses, who were accompanied by three citizens of Ukraine.
Investigators of the Security Service proved that the criminal group, during four months of its existence, had smuggled across the border nearly 200 illegal immigrants.
During the investigation, they identified all those involved in this illegal scheme, including the police officer.
Uzhgorod City and District Court found the former police officer guilty under Part 1 of Art.255 (creating criminal organization), Part 2 of Art.332 (illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine committed by previous concert by a group of people) and Part 3 of Art.364 (abuse of power or position) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced him to a five years imprisonment with a three years probation period.
