On Sunday March 10, around the Radvanka quarry in Uzhgorod, there was the first of this year’s cycling championships of Transcarpathia in Cross Country. The longest distance consisted of four 3 km laps: steep turns, rocky, wet, slippery slopes – there were many tough sections where riders had to show all their skills to stay in the saddle.
The tough route and difficult weather conditions did not frighten the competitors, only added excitement and adrenaline in the blood. As the chairman of the regional cycling federation Eduard Taturevych noted at the opening of the event: – "The weather challenged us. We are not going to argue with it, but we are not going to give up either!"
The struggle for medals was in five age categories, but the toughest competition was in the categories "Men and juniors," where during the race it was never clear who would take the prizes. Six leaders reached the finish line almost simultaneously. In this confrontation in absolute championship, 18-year-old candidate master of sports from Uzhgorod Oleksandr Zubenko came first by a whisker, followed by the masters of sports of Ukraine Ferenc Hutlebet and Oleksiy Zhdanovych.
As a result, most of the prizes in these competitions went to representatives of the Transcarpathian center of tourism and sport (director Volodymyr Chepa), Uzhgorod SC "Banzai-Ra" (coaches Vira and Oleksiy Zhdanovyches) and Mukachevo SC "Tovarysh" (coaches Nina Raschupkina and Oleksandr Tsepurdey), as well as to representatives of the Svalyava Sports School for Children and Youth "Spartak" (coach Andriy Karputenko).
