In the winter of 2012, in Ukraine about 200 people died from hypothermia, that is the highest number among European countries. This is written in the article of "Kommersant".
The first wave of deaths from hypothermia was early in the year, when the country suffered from anomalous cold – up to 30-36 degrees below zero. Then, during two weeks 112 people died in Ukraine.
Last winter, Ukraine has become a leader among European countries by the number of deaths from hypothermia.
In December 2012, according to the Ministry of Health, already 83 people died from hypothermia in Ukraine. Only in Russia there were more victims – 90 people. So, in 2012, Ukraine became an absolute European leader by the number of deaths from hypothermia.
Meanwhile charity organizations claim that the Ministry of Health data on deaths from hypothermia are understated.
"According to the estimates of non-governmental organizations, the number of victims of the December frost is about 200 people," – said the spokesperson of the All-Ukrainian Charitable Fund "Social Partnership" Anna Vuks.
She also noted that people who die from hypothermia on the streets usually are not those who are homeless, but those who drank and slept on the street.
Also Vuks stressed that most of the victims are older people who are unable to heat their houses.
64% of the victims died of hypothermia during the night. Almost 69% of them – on the streets.
Earlier it was reported that due to the large number of victims of frost MOE decided to install tents for heating in every region of Ukraine.
