December 1 is the National Day of Romania. The relevant law after the adoption of resolution on the merger of territories between the rivers Mureş, Tisa and Danube Krishan, Satu Mare Maramures with Romania in Alba Iulia was adopted after the revolution of 1989 and the failure of the communist regime.
Every year the capital of the Grand Unity traditionally gathers Romanians from every place densely populated by the community. In addition, this day is celebrated in the areas where they live. Ukraine and namely, Transcarpathia, where 40,000 Romanians live, is not an exception. Every year on December 1-2 villages of Tyachiv and Rakhiv districts, with the support and assistance of the Consulate General of Romania in Chernivtsi, organize cultural events.
So, tomorrow, December 2, in the village of Solotvyno the Society of Transcarpathian Romanians "Hope" (Speranţa) and "Maramuresans" start their holiday with the laying of flowers at the monuments of two great sons of the Romanian people – the poet Mihai Eminescu and Stephen the Great, the brightest figure in Romanian history, who was named the Athlete of Christianity by Pope Sixtus IV for numerous victories over the Turks.
By tradition, the leaders of the Romanian community in Transcarpathia celebrate the Day of Romania in nearby Sighetu Marmației on December 1, and tomorrow representatives of local authorities of Sighetu and outstanding performers of inflammatory Maramuresan songs will visit Solotvyno. Thus, the Romanians open the cycle of winter holidays, the most significant event of which is the Festival of carols, which is traditionally held on 25 December in Sighetu with the participation of Romanians from Maramures, Bucovina, Moldova and Transcarpathia.
