Tunnel construction in the Carpathians will soon be commenced (VIDEO)

The new tunnel will have been erected by the end of 2015, the railway capacity will be doubled.

The construction of the new railway Beskyd tunnel in the Carpathians will soon be commenced. This was reported by the press service of "Ukrainian Railways".

The new tunnel will increase the capacity of the railway for the transportation of goods in transit to Western and Central Europe. Thus, the capacity of the tunnel will be about 100 trains a day instead of the current 47 trains. The maximum speed will increase from 40 to 60 km / h.

Beskyd tunnel was built back in 1886 and has already exhausted its lifetime.Because of deformation of concrete and deterioration of drainage system, groundwater seeps into the tunnel, and in winter moisture turns into ice that threatens the security of trains. Trains pass through the tunnel at the minimum speed.

Beskyd tunnel is the only single-track section on the length of the V Crete transport corridor, which passes through Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and Russia (Trieste-Ljubljana-Budapest-Bratislava-Uzhgorod-Lviv).

The new two-way tunnel will be built a few dozen meters away from the existing one.   Completion of the new tunnel is projected for 2015.
