Residents of Svoboda Avenue in Uzhgorod took on sledge hammers

A few days ago the inhabitants of houses number 29 and 31 on the Svoboda Avenue in Uzhgorod noted that in the green zone, which lies between these high-rises, there was a group of workers. Men began to cut down trees and shrubs, as well as to build a small foundation in the green belt.

The residents failed to protect the trees, but at the end of the day, a group of activists gathered near the workers to ask them what they were erecting. As a resident of one of the buildings, Mrs Natalia told uzhgorod.in, people protested because the trees on the green belt were not in emergency state, but now all that is left of them are only the stumps, which, as it seems, nobody is going to uproot. "The workers admitted that they wanted to build a shopping kiosk on the green belt – complains the woman. – We believe that they should have asked our consent, because this kiosk is going to be just a few meters from our windows. And who wants to have trade conducted under their windows?".

Since the workers who built the foundation could not show the residents of nearby houses any permits, the people decide to act by themselves. Once it got dark, they took sledge hammers and smashed the foundation to the base.

uzhgorod.in turned for comment to the chief architect of the regional center Oleksandr Sheba, who noted that the entrepreneur in fact has the permission to install temporary vending kiosk at this point, but he had no right to cut down trees. The Chief Architect promised to figure out who’s right in this situation within the next few days.
