Year 2013 in Uzhgorod is the Year of restoration of architectural heritage

Year 2013 in Uzhgorod may be the year of the restoration of architectural heritage – if members of the city council will support this idea.

To declare 2013 the "Year of the restoration of architectural heritage" – with such a proposal civic activists appealed to the chief architect of Uzhgorod. As the townspeople are afraid of losing the unique identity of Uzhgorod, they suggest some practical steps to preserve the architectural face of the city. 

"We should give a little more attention to the preservation of heritage remnants and the restoration of partially lost symbols of the city. It must be done by people who live here and love their home. And on the eve of the Day of the City, we decided to once again draw the attention of the authorities and the community to the fact that it is wrong to celebrate the anniversary of Uzhgorod without respecting its history and architectural environment. We ask the city government to support our initiative and approve our proposal at the city council session. We stress the urgent need to delineate the boundaries of the protected zone in the central part of the city and set rules for handling in the protected zone. We also propose to hold a competition for the partial financing of the restoration of one of the valuable buildings in the central part of the city" – said social activist Victoria Ryzhova.

Also they offer to create the organization for cultural heritage protection to perform effective work in this sphere. What is also important is that community activists are ready to provide their support for the preservation and restoration of the architectural face of the city – from organizational work on creating a registry and outline the protected zone to the practical restoration of facades and more.

Chief Uzhgorod architect Oleksandr Sheba supported this idea and promised to develop a draft decision, which he will offer to approve at the session of the City Council.
