Quarantine was imposed in Transcarpathian region due to western corn rootworms

Quarantine for plants was imposed in Transcarpathia because of the emergence of western corn rootworm beetle, which can destroy the crops of corn, – informs state inspector of Mizhgirya Inter-district Plant Quarantine Station Mykhajlo Bletskan.

"If in the past there were isolated cases of the western corn rootwarms emergence, now their number has significantly increased on crops. Beetles are transferred with an air flow, but the pest can spread by vehicles either, "- said the inspector.

According to him, the quarantine will help stop the parasite within the area where it was discovered. In particular, the export of grain, corn cobs is prohibited.

"There are agronomic measures, including annual rotation of corn corps, including cereals, grasses, clover, alfalfa. The application of biological and chemical measures, including the use of insecticides is also possible,"- added the officer.
